The Pocket - Victorian

The YARD-O-LED iconic Pocket Fountain Pen. Handmade in solid 925 sterling silver in the historic Birmingham workshop and edged in a golden brass trim to highlight the barrel, it is exquisitely topped with a hand-set enamelled coin at the base of the pen. The design has been modified and improved to feature a screw top cap to better protect the 18C gold nib within. It is the first screw top mechanism YARD-O-LED has featured for any writing instrument. The cap can also be screwed onto the end of the pen when being used.

This edition is the Victorian hand chased model with sky blue enamelling.

Enamelling is one of the oldest forms of surface decoration and has been used by artists to add vivid colour to jewellery since 13th century BC. This release is the first time YARD-O-LED has incorporated the ancient decoration on to its writing instruments. Initially used to create incredibly high-quality jewellery for religious and ceremonial items, vitreous enamel refers to the thin layer of glass which is fused at high temperatures onto the surface of a metal to create intricate patterns and designs.

The Victorian pattern is applied entirely by hand, exactly as Birmingham silversmiths would have finished silverware and writing instruments in the Victorian era, before mechanised engine turning became the industry standard. This pattern has been achieved with up to 3,000 hand-chasing taps.

The pattern exists for two reason: practically, the hand chased texture provides a secure grip on the silver barrel, while aesthetically, it showcases an exceptional level of craftsmanship. 

Because it's done by hand no two Victorian pattern pens are identical, and each hand chasers develops their own slight variation on the pattern. Subsequently, our workshop can identify whose work a pen is, just by looking at it, when it comes back for servicing decades later.  

Technical Specification

The famous glassy finish of vitreous enamel is made by firing in furnaces at temperatures of up to 900°C. As it cools, it fuses together to create glass-coated metal giving vitreous enamel its unique combination of properties. The smooth surface that is created during this process is scratch, chemical and fire resistant, making it incredibly durable and allows for the colour to be preserved for many years without fading.
